Hello all, I found a Penn Mag 10 stashed away in a pile of old gear and was wondering is there is a prefabbed cage or upgraded reel foot for these things? The original one pretty bent up and seems very flimsy. I'm also looking to remove the levelwind and use it for a beach reel. Everything I've seen has been heavy handtool/machine shop mods, not really willing to ruin a reel trying my hand at these type of mods. Thank you,

not alot of upgrades available for this reel. stick with a general clean up and lube, greased carbon fiber drags and maybe a larger jigmaster 24-56 power handle. it should be sturdy enough!

You can get a brand spankin' new stand for this reel from Mystic...they have the drags too. https://www.mysticparts.com/PennParts/Parts/30-10.aspx

I can make you a spacer kit that allows you to run a clamp stand from a 49 Mariner.
I also make a stainless steel level wind delete.
PM me if you're interested.

Hmm. Besides nostalgia, are these things any better than an Ambassadeur? I like the look and feel of this reel, but not sure of its use as a casting reel in its current state.

Ambassadeurs have been around a lot longer than the Penn 10. The mag 10 has only been around for about 40 years so it's later day arrival for Penn. If you are putting a premium on casting then the Ambassadeur is a better option. If you are putting a premium on strength then the Mag 10 is a better option. See Randy's Mag 10 thread here: https://alantani.com/index.php?topic=25781.0and more good info here: https://alantani.com/index.php?topic=4889.0and then there is the Pennbassadeur https://alantani.com/index.php?topic=25045.0-steve

Nice reel, Chad does good work, & I like the handles with plenty of adjustments, with the drag upgrade it should work great for many years, cheers Don.

Thanks. I like a lot of the custom power handles out there, but wanted to keep with traditional Penn styling on the 10 and this handle was perfect.

Take Chad up on the reel seat spacers - it cures what might be a weak spot. Clean and lube as Alan says but go very light on the bearings and level wind, TSI is what I'm using, then cast it. I think you'll be surprised. If you still want more then get a level wind delete from Chad as well. It doesnt really need more drag than stock Penn or Smooth drag 3 stack. The hardest part is going to be the dog if you want to go stainless. Ive been making a few from other dogs but working by hand with a needle file takes hours.

Oh that reel foot looks like quite the upgrade. I'm looking ob mystic for the Mariner reel foot. What is the correct part name for that?

It’s 30-49 but not a direct bolt on, your going to need spacers and new screws. It takes a little drilling but easily done with a hand drill. Or just send it to Chad and buy the whole kit and install. Keep us updated on the process.

Chad, Jave you considered running your adapter up the sides of the reel enough to use 501 bars? Then you could run a complete Newell kit and delete the top bar. Pretty nice.

Ron, That's a good idea! Mike (mhc) did something similar but a lot more intense on his Mag 10. The only problem it, it's a lot more work, than just the stand upgrade. The 30-49 holes line up with the holes in the Mag 10 plates perfectly, they just use larger screws so that's why I drill and counterbore the side plates. Adding the spacer bars would require much more extensive modifications like Mike did. The kind of mods that are fun to do for yourself, but not something many customers would be willing to pay for. At least not enough to make it worth the effort. Chad
