Hi All,

Have a friends Baitrunner that he wants to change the handle from Left to Right, and the handle will not screw into the right side. As with most Shimano's this is a simple process of reversing the handle from one side to the other.

The left side works fine, but not the right. The threads are obviously fine.

Any ideas ?? Confused.

Thanks,

Terry.

The threads can't be fine! Did you check the threading inside the gear (female)?

There is likely either messed up threads or some obstruction, Terry --

Generally, these will force through enough to get a fresh "thread bite".

You will figure it out -- they all switch from left to right.

Assuming you mean a 4000D -- not a 400D?

Make sure you're turning it the correct direction.
On the left side, you it to the left.  On the right side, turn it to the right.
Maybe too obvious, but I miss things like this now and then so it doesn't hurt to mention just in case.  ;D

I was thinking the same thing, Chad.

True, but Terry already knows this -- he is very experienced in reel repair and service.

So it is likely boogered threads inside the gear shaft.

Generally easy enough to correct.

Thanks all for the reply's. Yes Fred it is the 4000D. Typo on my part.

I do know my left from my right, but thanks for mentioning this.

The thread on the handle is fine, otherwise it would not thread into the gear on the left side.

It must be an issue with the thread on the gear shaft. It's not gripping at all. Will keep trying maybe with a little pressure.

Much appreciated.

Cheers,

Terry.

not at all: it's a two-part fat/skinny screw w/ one part reverse-threaded
so either side just works in direction of retrieve
if the skinny part broke off, only one side works
if it's still there, you have a 2nd set of male/female threads to check

Terry, I meant no disrespect, I'm sure your knowledge of reels is well beyond mine.  :)

I only mentioned it because I do occasionally overlook the more obvious things since my mind is already thinking there's something major going on.  I usually do this when trying to fix my car!  ::)

I hope you can get it figured out and it's an easy fix!

Firstly, I am very appreciative to all the guidance and advice. xjchad I know your advice was intended to help, and no issue with that. Thank you.

I ended up opening the reel to remove the main gear, and with good lighting discovered that the right side of the handle slot has no thread ! This is to me a fault from Shimano !! If I am wrong please would someone tell me.

This is the first of hundreds of spinners I have worked on, and the only one I have had this issue with.

My specialty is baitcasting reels, but have enough common sense to work on any and most reels.

Is the thread missing, or is it not supposed to be threaded on the right side.

Cheers,

Terry.

are you sure there isn't smaller ID thread deeper inside the gear?
as I mentioned, it's a two part screw that engages the gear differently depending on what side it is:
for L/H retrieve, fat reverse-threaded part engages threads right at the edge, while skinny part sits in a deeper smooth cavity "inactive"
conversely, for R/H retrieve, fat reverse-threaded part sits in smooth cavity "inactive" & skinny part engages threads deeper in the gear
I'm guessing the skinny part of your handle screw snapped off neatly enough to show no signs of damage -- that's why you're befuddled
do a photo, to be sure

Hi Phil,

The thread on the handle is as you say, with 2 differnt cuts.

The handle is fine. Have attached a picture. The one with the black cap is the one on the reel with the issue. The other one is from a spare baitrunner. The spare one does not thread into the right side either.

I can get befuddled as is the case with most of us. I am convinced that the main gear did not have the threads cut on the right side.

Telling the owner to take it back to Shimano for a warranty claim.

Thanks very much for your specialist input.

Cheers,

Terry.

Just curious, does the handle slide all the way in but it just doesn't "grab"?

Zimbass

That is right nelz. No thread to grab onto.

Terry.

Terry, my official forensic analysis (guess) ;D would be that since the customer wants it on the right, he may have had it there before and stripped it!  :o
