Hers another free info link to almost anybodys grasp.  One thing possibly new to you is the use of an adjustable rpm device for the dryer motor. :-\.   See what you think.  Theres some good here and its just an idea.   Lets go fishing ;)

Variable speed is through a direct current controller I assume?

The simplicity of drying the rod should spark inthusiasm 🎣

The local electrition, was telling me that a 12 volt DC motor is best for this work, such as tread mill walkers, as they already have the speed controls on them, as with the varying speeds, they dont burn out like the AC motor, when your trying to run them slow, cheers Don

Those treadmill motors are better for things like a wood turning lathe. They are really large (most are over 2hp). You can buy a speed controller for small DC motors called a Pulse Width Modulator (PWM) for less than $10. Pulse Width Modulator speed controllers work by pulsing the full voltage to increase and decrease the motor speed instead of reducing the voltage so you keep good low speed torque. You can see one I used in a rod dryer build here:
At about 4:45 into the video, you can see the little PWM speed controller.
