isn't felt just non-woven fabric (pressed/formed fibers), regardless of base material
you know, wool in hats; poly(?) on pool tables; etc.
what is the base material in that [off]white reel felt, anyway?

   Exactly...this is what I was saying. There are two entirely different asbestos washers used in the 3000 and 5000. Getting technical, the 5000 actually has both types, "felt" in the spool and "hard" under it. In initial testing, I found the felt asbestos to be superior to the hard asbestos, but that's not the end of the story. I've found how to make the inferior hard version as smooth as the better felt.
