My brother just picked this reel up and is unable to find any

Any discussion or leads to info is appreciated.

Start looking for info on a "349"... that's your model.  penn never made a 549.
You'll find all you need.

Dom...
Perfect. I thought the similarities to the 349 "Master Mariner" were
too identical. I even sent him the link to the 349. Ha ! Thank you sir.

This I have never seen before.  The side plate is indeed marked 549.
:D I talk with every part I send out and each reel I repair so that they perform at the top of their game. :D

Misprint, worth something money to a serious collector.
I have a 118 stand marked 117.

Forget about all the reasons why something may not work. You only need to find one good reason why it will.

I think its an illusion from the angle of the picture.

It sure looks like a 5 to me Chris.

I think you're right Chris, just looked at some vintage 349 plates and the 3 does appear to look like a 5.

I will post head on close up glamour shot as soon as the reel is available.
Personally I'm betting on optical illusion. I vote "349". ;)

If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, chances are it's a duck and not a swan  ;)  ;)

Just pulled out a New Old Stock 349 plate to compare the numbers --

It sure looks like a "5" to me -- comparing the two.

We will know more when Charles posts some clearer closeup shots.

Maybe it is a prototype High Speed Master Mariner -- 549 -- 1:5 gear ratio!! 😁😁

At any rate -- I think it is some sort of badging error.  And it could be worth some serious $$$.

Some of our other experts like Michael, and a few others will have views and unbiased opinions on this.

I would not fish the reel -- if a "5", it deserves to be in someones collection.
