550 is aluminum; 5500 is where the reels 5000 size and down went graphite.

Thank you for the clarification. Foot in mouth at least once a day.

It's time to drill the rotor  :)

I'm not sure what that means,
Here's some inspiration.

edit:  ..... but that's not to say I condone such behavior.

seen some UL's totally stripped/drilled/de-bailed for A FUNCTIONAL PURPOSE
(total weight reduction is significant & strength reduction is irrelevant for F/W XUL)
don't see the attraction, otherwise

Oh you mean the sand intake ports?

I think it was the tiny greenie & Alcedo (or maybe Cargem)
either, Joe Robinson's or someone else in his XUL threadlining crowd
...don't even think anything was additionally ported -- just sanded "way past shine"
to the point of noticeable "material removal" for weight reduction

...like the "bedazzled 300's", the photos seem gone from the Internet :(

But it definitely passes the time. Last night I went out to work on it for what I told myself would be a half hour. Next thing i knew it was 2am. Who needs sleep anyway?

haha, samething happen to my often, when I just wanted to spend 2hrs on a rod I see myself at 3am saying I will just wrap one more guide and go to bed.

I wish I had the time to do something like polishing a reel but currently have a long list of rods to build and another one of reels to repair.

Do what you can with that you have where you are

Day 4. Sanding is done. I need to get out the rotary and blast with some polish and its time to reassemble. I think im about 8-9 hours in. I could see taking orders if people want their own mirror rig. I'd probably charge around 200 for labor. But that was never the point of any of this.

Polishing is done. Assembling it tonight, and hopefully fishing it tomorrow. Gonna go east to watch the launch, so maybe I'll go to the beach and toss out a big hunk of ladyfish while we wait.

yep that reel needs to have the rotor drilled to really have a show-off effect

I thought about it. But frankly the rotor isn't that heavy, and such mods only look good if they're super duper precise/symmetrical. So thats a lot of room for error without a lot of payoff. I'll probably pass on that.

What sucks though is I was so proud of my first one, but this one is much better execution, and now all i see on my first one are the flaws. I'm sure I'll get over it.

you can take your 1st one to a local machine shop and show them some pics of what you need on your reel, they have some nice tools to make it happen, take your desition depending on their price.
