I purchased a steel gear for a penn 6/0 off ebay a few days ago assuming it would fit into my 114h. Was disappointed when I realized the gears were not the same size. The gear is received is slightly smaller. Do these reels use a different size gear?

Hardy Boy

Yes they do. You got the lower gear for a 114 (Black 114) which is smaller than the gear for a 114H (red). The 114 gear is smaller and has a lower gear ration

FYI, The 9/0 and the 114H use the same main gear. Just different pinions.

I believe the pinion gear from a black 114 will fit in a 115 (which uses the main gear from a 114H).

NO, the 114 & 114h use different main gears.
