Marquesa Handle spanner

 I've got two Marquesa's need a service & can't get the handles off try as i might as i don't have a spanner & don't want to spoil them using vice grips does anyone know of a way of loosening them

Pliers and a piece of leather or rubber to cushion it and prevent marring.
