Here is a nice Ocean City 16/0 reel along with the box and carry, fighting or pull handle which ever you want to call it. In this case I say the box is much harder to come by than the reel !! Same goes with pull handle. I have seen many 616 OC reels but only a hand full of 616 boxes and out of that hand full only one or two were in good shape. Same goes with the 614 boxes but I have seen more of them in good shape than the 16/0 boxes. People probably re-purposed the boxes as they were a good rugged box. Anyway Enjoy !!!!

A beautiful and nearly impossible combo to duplicate, in unused condition yet,  John!

Very, very, very nice. Never knew about the boxes. What era is that beauty from?
So, what's your collecting secret?

There are only two ways to get reels of this caliber —

Dumb luck (it is a low percentage game that some will try — and go through a lifetime still waiting for that pearl to drop out of a tree.  And sometimes they do).

Or...one can gain a reputation for paying top dollar for the best examples of what they want, keeping in close contact with other collectors, keeping track of who has what because everything becomes for sale at some point, doing reciprocal favors for others, letting others know what you will pay good money for immediately — and what you want, beating the bushes for the little obscure details that might lend a clue to where these reels are, and not being afraid to pay way above what others may think the item is worth.

Another thing — once you start paying over top dollar for the very rare reels that you want in great condition — many more opportunities will come your way privately — not eBay, Craigslist, or yard sales — collector to collector — quiet, private, and where one's word is their bond.  Plus good friendships and correspondence with other collectors.

And then a new higher price point is established — and the reel that you paid maybe double the going rate — is now worth more immediately.  A new bar.

I am confident that John is in the latter category.

There is an old saying that the experienced, seasoned collectors use —

You can't pay too much for a perfect reel — or too little for a rough one...

Just my opinion.

It is easy to make a small fortune in the reel repair game — just start with a large one!
