I snapped a rod by using it well above what it was meant for, by using it with a different reel than it was meant for.

Am I a moron if I rebuild an identical rod for the originally intended reel? In my head now I really know the limits.

what was your line rating? leader rating? rod rating? did it break fighting a fish or pulling out a snag?

the reel is irrelevant since you can lower the drag and thumb it up so it's a non issue.

10-20# rod, it broke high sticking a 5+ foot shark right in front of me, as he was trying to go under the dock with the drag well above 20# at the time. It's on video. I havent uploaded it because the audio definitely breaks the 12yr rule.

First time using the rod, 2nd fish. I built it for a much smaller reel but i really wanted to try out my hot rodded 506.

was your leader was over 15lbs that was the problem. it should have broken off before your rod did.

If you like the rod build another.  However you need to set your drag to the rod.  Drag ratings on rods are not equal across the manufacturers.  Alan has a post detailing how to do it.  Basically you set your rod in a holder and apply pressure until you achieve a 45* bend in the rod.  The weight required is the upper drag limit for the rod.  Bill
It may not be very productive,
but it's sure going to be interesting!

The high sticking was probably the problem, especially if the rod was graphite or a graphite composite. Graphite rods do not like high sticking.

High sticking a 20lb rod with 20lb of drag... yeah that will definitely do it!

Probably a total mismatch of rod to reel, if I'm honest.

Well, I made the new one. More pics to come but I'm pretty happy with the marbling.

Looks nice!
High sticking happens to us all sometimes in a variety of ways.   I generally won't do it when lifting a fish or pulling in a normal upright manner, but I have at least twice broken a rod when trying to move a fish that was on the deck to a better spot to unhook it.   When you do that the brain does not seem to recognise that you are putting load on the rod at the wrong angle. ;D

Jason it looks like you can fix that rod, it will be as good as new.

The blank was less than $30 for the first round, and on sale the 2nd time. I reused all hardware except the seat. The amount I paid to replace it is well worth the confidence of a fresh blank.

I actually went to single foot guides for the last 4 runners. I figure free up more of the power of the blank, even if I risk having to rewrap one.
