new member here.  Have recently found this sight and enjoying it very much.  I'm not a gear head but have learned so much from this site and would like to thank you Alan and all the great members.  Seems like everyone is high on the Maks so I wonder if ppl have tried jigging with the Mak 8.  If seems like a great all round reel with the high drag, small size and relatively light weight.  I know Okuma has the Andros for jigging but like the higher drag on the Mak.

welcome!  i've never tried jigging, but i understand that an instant anti-reverse system is preferred.  the andros and makaira do not have that.  i would not have figured that it would make that much difference, but some have indicated that it does.  i would welcome you input.  alan

G'day pavlov and welcome aboard.
Jigging is hugely popular here in NZ and, without going into too much detail, broadly divides into two camps - speed jigging and mechanical jigging.
Both involve dropping to a specific depth, as indicated on the fish finder, and - in the former - winding like a madman on a high-retrieve reel, ie 4:1 or 5:1.
Instant anti reverse (AR) isn't a critical factor in speed jigging (but often comes as standard on modern high-retrieve reels).
The latter mechanical style doesn't require a high retrieve rate as you're hoisting the rod upwards between winds, so the rod's doing the 'speed' work.
Instant AR can be an advantage if there's a lag before the AR dogs hook up (ie few teeth on the ratchet gear), as the dogs can get chewed if not fully engaged before the pressure comes on.
I use a Penn 9500SS for jigging and have made a 12-tooth S/S ratchet gear for exactly this reason (the standard gear has six).
Instant AR is a 'nice to have', but by no means a 'must have'.
I reckon the Mak8 would be a ripper, but Clem's Jigging Masters look great too...

It helps getting into a rhythm of lift and wind when you mechanically jig, the more positive locking compared to the handle slop is helpful. Most of the reels mechanical jiggers use are pretty high end and have it as standard anyway but there's been a trend back to a dog backup as well.

Re the ratios, I've been jigging for five years now and heard from plenty of people that slower ratios are better, I've never really understood the theory behind that as I use to use an accurate 665 narrow with 6:1 and now have a trini 40n in 4.9:1 and love the fast retrieve and never had an issue with it. Chatting to the owner of a shop here that supplies a lot of jigging gear to NZ and has the accurate agency he pretty much said if it works for you don't worry about what the other guys think. I did have an accurate 197 with 4:1 and I hated it , it was really difficult to load up the rod and keep in touch with the jig .Its been replaced with a trini 16na and works well as a lighter set up.

A mate of mine came out with an andros which seemed like a nice reel. The only issue was the handle gave him a few blisters so if you get one you might want to look at some gloves, or a handle upgrade. 24lbs is the max drag in the catalogue, I wouldn't go much lower than that in a jig set

And welcome to the site.

Edit, Jigging master have added a high speed version of the their smaller reels to their line up, if I was in the market for a reel the size you mentioned I'd be getting a PE 3 or 4 .
