I have been lucky enough to be given two 2500c. They definitely need a good cleaning. What is the lowest weight these can effectively cast? I currently use a daiwa alphas air + a major craft benkei BFS rod for fishing 2.5-7g jigs/lures around San Diego Bays and jetties. I know there is A LOT of BFS tuning parts for these reels, but I am not sure I want to plunk $500+ to upgrade the all of the internal parts. At a minimum, would I just need an avail spool, bearings, and the avail cog that has bearings?

Also saw a fun website that turns it to a no level wind version:

Im guessing for this I only need a spool and bearings?

Send Tincanary an email or pm. This is his bailiwick, and he is a great guy to talk to.

spool and bearings will get you 90% of the way there..

not a 2500, but a very similar reel 3500 with Avail spool and Mike's Reel Repair 2500c bearings.
It throws 2.5g easily and well, I have cast 1g without problems.

Spool was $75, bearings $11.

Hi there, yes ended up just going with the bearings and spool for my two 2500c. What rod is that? I have not tried 1g but definitely good with 2.5g-5g. This weekend I will try it wwith a 1.5g jig head.

Bait Finess System.  What we used to call light tackle fishing.

If you're running a Zzeta frame, all you'll need is a spool, bearings, and braking system of your choice.  If you're going to be throwing 1/8 or above, I recommend the centrifugal brake.  The Avail spools are very light so you will only need one block.  I personally run one of the Avail extra small blocks, and it will cast backlash free, even in breezy conditions.  Keep in mind, if you go with the deeper 2560R spool, you will be relegated to centrifugal only.  If you are running a 2520R or 2540R, a mag brake will be better under 1/8 oz.  Those are static mag brakes, so you will need to mix and match magnets until you find what works for you.  I personally run a pair of 4x3mm and a single 4x2mm magnet.  I still need to thumb it ever so slightly, but it casts great.

As others said, new spool depending on availability.  I personally have about 2.2 grams as my bottom.  3 is much nicer.  Great little reel!

the rod is an Abu Zoom Safari ZMSC-565L
These look like the old Abu Zoom rods from the 80s, nice retro look to go with the old Abu reel.
Only available in Japanese market as far as I know, this one came from JDM Tackle Heaven - they are great, fast shipping and good service. Quite expensive shipping but.
