What is the wrap technique called when the thread begins gapped on the foil then  gets tighter toward the guide?

Looks like my old Sabres.  Does somebody still supply the thread?  (I am not a "rod" guy, but I have an old Sabre with a bad guide)... - john

It's Gudebrod (OOB) Trimar variegated thread with just a spiral wrap over the foil. The original Thorhammer rod color scheme was blk/gold Trimar underwrap and red/gold over guide feet with gold trim bands and matching diamond wrap. I had to change when Gudebrod went OOB as current red/gold trimar isn't even close. I kept a few spools in escrow to repair my own stuff.

thorhammer you are correct, that is definitely the old Gudebrod trimar thread. The old Holland variegated thread didn't have shiny mylar in it. Sorry jgp12000 my mistake!  :d

I used to made some of my rod and for friends but never do any fancy wrap ,mostly only 1 color and never do butt wrap , a few rods I only add a band of lighter color .I never apply color preserve either . I do made double or triple on heavy salt water rods

The gaps in the wrapping was a mid-century modern 1950's thing.  I think it was first put on the Shakespeare Wonderods.  Initially, there was no foil under the wraps.

You have probably seen those post-war Japanese fishing kits in the wood boxes.  They were marked Karaku, Mayflower, Granpa and many other things.  They used a variegated thread but the spacing between the marks was much shorter than on the Gudebrod stuff.  It's funny because there were many different brands or fabricators making those rods but they all used the exact same components and the same thread.
