First service encounteer with the S229-5. I got it as a parts reel, thinking I could fix it. I Did not realize that non handle side plate has two nuts that cannot be removed. How do you do that? On the handle side of reel I have a broken post and a missing head. I see that it's a very small hex nut. I need to remove the side plate to access the reel bar. Or do I just put the reel onto a Tiboron 229 frame. Still have to remove the non handle side plate of reel.

I'm not a Newell expert, but if you're talking about reel seat bolts, I believe the S model reel seat bolts go all the way through to other side. Not sure about the other frame bolts.

Two rules on the boat
1. Fish where the fish are
2. See rule #1

Yes, long screws go all the way thru the cross bars to the other side. Not a great design. You'll need to pull those out to get the reel apart. Tapping them out from the handle side or vice grips if you can get the screw head to stand a little proud on the non handle side. Be persistent
Some of the screws are threaded into the ring too, that's probably that tiny hex bolt you're seeing
Do what you can with that you have where you are
