I have this reel from a captain from Magbay in Baja south, yes, there is the state of Baja and below the state of "Baja South", he just told to try to fix it, I wasnt prepared to see what I found when I opened the reel, lots of corrosion here and there that "might" not be that bad, but I've never seen the spool 'posts' eroded by the drag washer (you will see it in the pictures), also a lot of scratching marks in the frame by the spool, bearings were falling apart when I opened the reel and few bearing rails are still kinda glued to the frame by the galvanic corrosion.
so, considering this reel is almost $500 dlls, I just want some opinions if you think is still worthy to try to save it, I estimate around $130-150 dlls in parts but it could be more once is back together and still found problems with it.

check the pictures

this is the spool, check those posts, those should be thicker and now are thin maybe becase of play of the drag washer or maybe someone filed them to install another drag washer, I never saw something like that before

check how the drag washer have a lot of play within those posts

in the next pictured you will see how those posts are kind of eroded / worn

it also have some ugly spool marks on the frame, so this reel was still in use while having bearings problems or with the spool shaft bent or both

nut at the back of the gears of the 2-speed mechanism was forced or something because the nut lost all the threads on it, so, it cant be tighten again

almost all bearings need to be replaced

and last but not least some corroded parts that might led to problems in short future

opinions?

I don't own any Avet reel but look at the inside it was very well built reel and this reel had to pull lots of fish up . It worth the price of $600

Alex - Only my opinion, but I have a few Avets and been inside quite a few.  But in my world that's a parts reel.  Not sure how easy it is to get Avet parts for you (there are other threads on that) but - ALL of those bearings are shot, and that is the least of the issues.  The biggest reason I say "No" on this is all of the corrosion, and even if you go through and clean all of that off (and don't have clearance/tolerance issues, as you pointed out - be a shame to put it all back together and find out it still doesn't work.) BUT assuming you do all the work and get it working like a top - the metal (anodizing) is so compromised that it will immediately begin to corrode as soon as it gets within a mile of saltwater.  And not throwing shade at the Captain, but based on these photos it will continue to see rough use, major neglect and little cleaning, which in its condition it means its gonna fail even faster -and you probably don't need that grief.  Again, only my thoughts. - john
