Alan, how can i beef up the drags on my Penn Int. 20 & 30
to fish 80# braid ? I like the smaller reels, lighter to handle
on an 12 or 24 hr trip. I would like to do it myself instead of
sending it to Cal's. even tho i like his 2spd setup on a 20
for my older reel that is like new.

first thing, make sure you have an HT-100 or dura drag washer, then grease it with cal's grease.  second, change the belleville configuration from "()()" to "(())", or add an extra belleville and change it to "(()))".  a bearing sleeve will help as well.  take a look at the international 30 rebuild post.  alan

Alan, if i change the stack to (()) it's only .192 thick.
do i need to add another (())) to make up the .228 ()() stock ?
i saw you did that on another reel you fixed. free spool prob.
or can i use a spool end play shim to make up the diff. (())|  on the end or in the middle ((|)) to get the stack thickness right.
i hope i explaned it right.

i understand exactly what you're talking about.  sometimes it makes a difference, but, in most of the old internationals, there is enough "slop" built into the reel that you can throw in a belleville (or not) and do just fine.  bottom line, give it a try and see.  alan
