Penn 70VS from kamuwela !!!!

Grab a schematic & follow along. Going to be doing a Penn 70VS newer model.


Using penn tool, remove shift button retaining ring #110C & shift button assembly #172.


Remove shifter retaining plate #133.


Remove shifter catch holder #173B, retaining C-ring & shifter base plate sub-assembly #110B.


Remove handle.


Remove shield #50.


Remove left side plate assembly #27.


Remove spool #29L.


Remove right side plate assembly #1.


Remove & repack bearings & lightly coat plate.


Install repacked bearing.


Disassemble right side plate #1.


Remove main gear assembly. Add one drop each of corrosion X to click button assembly #36C & locating pin #161.


Remove ball bearing #55 & repack.


Remove cam follower #141, preset screw #143, eccentric cam #19, & cam thrust washer #4.


Grease plate & install cam thrust washer.


Install eccentric cam follower & preset screw.


Install repacked bearing #55.


Grease & install gear assembly.


Remove harness lugs #54.


Remove & grease stand #30.


Add some grease to screw holes & install stand.


Lightly grease screw holes on frame #183.


Grease & install harness lug #54.


Install left side plate.


Add grease to holes & install screws.


Unlock pin #156A & unscrew drag cover #156.


Remove drag washer #117D, left side bearing spring #41, metal drag washer #7A, & drag washer #117A.


Remove pinion gear #13.


Clean & grease drag washers wipe off excess. Use Shimano or Cal's drag grease.


Reinstall drag washers.


Remove ratchet #81.


Remove retaining ring #173, bearing #55, repack & reinstall bearing. Lightly grease screw holes & under ratchet.


Put a light coat of grease on ratchet & spool.


Install pinion gear.


Install pinion gear washer #67 & retaining screw #67A.


Install spool assembly.


Install disc clutch spring ()() in stock configuration. This can be changed, customer preferred the stock configuration.


Install plate #1.


Grease all holes & install screws.


Install cam thrust washer #4.


Install quadrant #2 & quadrant spacer/ratchet #2A.


Install eccentric lever #21.


Install bridge cover assembly #124B. Sorry pics are a little dark.


Grease inside & install shield #50.


Install handle screw locking plate #110A & handle screw #23.


Install shifter base plate sub line assembly #110B & C-clip #67B.


Install catch assembly #173A & shifter retaining plate #133.


Install shift button assembly #172 & shift button retaining ring #110C.


Use Penn wrench & tighten retaining ring.

Alan, about the 80vsw, having hard time opening the drag cover using the drag cover wrench that comes with the reels, saw in MysticParts.com that they use to sell 168-70VS Drag Cover Wrench, do you know where I may order one that would fit my 80VSW?

many thanks for the info kamuwela :), have another question, just cleaned
4 pcs of 80vsw and tested one with chattered drag, cleaned and grease them with Cal's drag grease the same way yet this one chattered terribly??? all drags are in good shape, what could have went wrong ??? ??? ???

i had a 130 that i left a little drag grease on and it was a little sticky. did you wipe the excess off?

hi kamuwela, wipe off all excess grease still the drag chattered ???, repacked the drag washers with Cal's drag grease and wipe off all excess grease but still it chatters ??? ???, at 20 lbs drag my rod tip bounces  ??? ??? ??? any suggestions? thanks, nicky

you got me thinking now. maybe a bearing going bad? can you swap bearings from a good reel?

hi kamuwela, tried changing all the 4 bearings still no luck, replace the drag washers with a new set that did the job :) no more chatter, surprisingly i don't see anything wrong with drag washers, many thanks for your help,
