OK, lets look at it another way!

Back in the days of fishing ALL/mostly mono, the rule of thumb for reels in the 3/0 size (ie Torium 30/40/50, SL30SH, etc) was 300/350 yards of desired test line. Do you STILL use this rule of thumb for braid TODAY and if not WHY/WHEN? Do you want more capacity on this size reel and if so why/what purpose(s)?

For the larger class reels (4/0 to 6/0, 40-80#) sizes, when is it NECESSARY/PRACTICAL to spool up with more than 500 yrds/meters of braid and WHY? In regards to these times of needing more than 500 yds of line, how much line would you like to have on the reel? What's your MINIMUM amount of line for these larger reels?

Do you NOW attempt to spool your spinning reels with the same capacity of line as your similar sized conventional reels?

The basic rule of thumb for standard SoCal fishing is largely unchanged, imo, reels have just gotten smaller to fish a given line class.

1. If I was fishing 30lb leader I would be doing it on a reel that could hold at least 300yds of 50lb braid ie a narrow "2/0" reel.

2. If I was fishing 40lb leader I would be doing it on a a reel that held at least 400 yds of 50-60 braid ie a narrow 3/0.

3. If I was fishing 60lb leader I would be doing it on a reel that held at least 500yds of 60-80 braid etc ie a narrow 4/0.

Adjust any of the above to your own needs.

I tend to err on the side of smaller and narrow rather than larger and wide but you get the idea. Back in the mono days you would have to be fishing reels bigger and wider to get that capacity. I also use short leaders for bait fishing until you get into the 100lb class and bigger so I can also fish a smaller reel for that reason.

ok late here but here is what I put on my reels for beach fishing
4/0's    300 yards 60# JBH, 270 yards of Bullbuster 50# mono
600H 500 yds of 80# JBH, 170 yards of Bullbuster 80# mono
900H 600 yds. of 130 JBH, 210 yards of Bullbuster 100# mono
