Aiala, I just sent you a PM...

THANKS so much, Paul... you're a true gentleman!

I wish you and yours an enjoyable and safe Easter weekend (out there in the wilds of Chino Hills.)   :D

I don't suffer from insanity... I enjoy every minute of it!  :D

I've just got a set of gamakatsu, found that they are made with rather soft material :-(

Just the eye or the entire hook?  Annealed eyes would be good.
Hi, my name is Lee and I have a fishing gear problem.

I have all of the answers, yup, no, maybe.

The tip of a long nose plier is enough to close the eye of a 5/0. I'll do a load test on the hook tomorrow.

As long as it's only the eye it's good to be soft.

I have a bunch of Gammy Siwash in small sizes & I'm not very impressed: not forged; probably not tempered; same heavy-gauge, weak(ish) wire entire length; good point/barb -- should be OK for little stuff (spoons for F/W stocked trout, S/W bait collection, etc.), but wouldn't trust 'em w/ decent fish

Keta

Forging is not necessary in small hooks.  The metallurgy of hooks are complex, they have to be hard enough so they don't straighten out under load but soft enough they don't break.  I've never broken a Owner or Gami but I have bend a 5/0 3x Owner Gorilla on something large.

I've found Gami hooks to be of good quality, the same for Owner and use both.  I also use a lot of Mustad hooks and they are also good.

#37
I've used & LOVED various Owner, Gamakatsu, Hayabusa, Daiichi, Tiemco, Kamassan & several small-time US/Canadian brands that were Japan-made, from 10/0 down to #32.  Basically, I never met a Japanese hook I seriously didn't like, UNTIL I bought those Gami Siwash in #8-2/0.

Bucktail

Yeah, the smaller size Gamakatsu Siwash hooks are not great.  I don't use them in sizes lower than 5/0 anyway.  So that's not a problem for me. The larger sizes are plenty strong.

Gamakatsu Siwash pull test with digital scale.

10011-25(1/0) - 30lb
10013-25(3/0) - 40lb
10015-25(5/0) - 55lb

All open are at the gap and not the eye.
I've tested them to the point where they open up but not yet straighten.

Keta

Are you pulling them on the point or the bend?

On the bend, but the pivot point to move a little towards the point as is open.

Keta

They seem to be strong enough for light wire hooks.
