I think everyone knows that we should only adjust the pre-set drag setting when the lever is @ free position.
Having taken apart my JM reel for service and trying to understand how it works, I've been trying to figure out why that would be bad for the reel?

Or could it simply be one of those instances where you just do something cos that's what everyone does

another internet myth.  the preset knob is a nut and the drive shaft is a bolt.  at some point you can damage the threads.  until you get to that point, you can dial down without trouble.  it's not like you're going to touch the knob and instantly ruin your reel.

I usually adjust the preset with the lever in free just to make sure I have freespool!

when you already have the reel set at a high drag setting and you are in gear, trying to increase the drag by turning down the preset knob MIGHT damage the threads on the preset knob.  the preset knob is generally softer brass and the spool shaft is stainless steel.  that's one of the reasons that it's good to set your optimum drag at the strike position.  then you can push the lever to full if you need a bit more pressure.

the problem reel that i have encountered is avet.  on some of the reels, the threads are loose.  the spool shaft threads are cut to the minimum and the preset knobs are cut to the maximum.  some reels have "slipped" at strike without even turning the preset knob.  of course, it's always more convenient to blame the operator, isn't it.

On Avet reels from the HX down you can crack the pinion bearing.

I have all of the answers, yup, no, maybe.

;D those are the ones I have (sx, mxl, lx, hx)

What aftermarket bearings are the best? And should I only replace thr pinion bearing?

alantani

if you set the drags properly, you should be fine.  that's the important part.

I've seen Avet pinion bearings (deep groove bearings) crack the outer race when dropped under load.  I love my Avet reels, I have 14 of them and will buy them again but the pinion bearing is a weak spot.
