Found this little gem at estate sale. It is a penn 78.

I agree.  Wish I got to that sale before you.

I was rooting through a pile of parts today and found this gem.  Unfortunately, I cannot find a single thing about it on the internet.  I thought that was impossible.

This is a real live barn find.  I just do not know what I found.  The quality is great.  It feels like a cross between an Abu Ambassadeur Ultra Mag (80s vintage) and an older Daiwa procaster.  The reel foot says 'Japan'.

I find plenty about DAM Quick, but nothing about this neat Japanese reel.  It is actually in very good condition.  It seems to be perfectly functional.

So many reels, so little time.

Nice.  You never know what you will find.

Nice.  I'm never that lucky myself.
:D I talk with every part I send out and each reel I repair so that they perform at the top of their game. :D

Sharkman, I have one of those cute reels, too.  I used it once to ice fish for trout, or did I use my old 190?  It's also an all-plastic, direct-drive reel, just slightly smaller than the 78.

To put things in perspective for those who are unfamiliar with the 78, the spool is the same size as a 501 but has a different spool shaft.

Unutt, your reel looks a lot like it was made by Shimano.

George,

I was thinking the same thing.  I still have no confirmation from any of my normal sources.

The person I bought it from usually sells me old reel parts.  This reel was mixed in with a pile of parts.  I was drawn to the thumb bar.  I plan to disassemble it during Christmas vacation.  I can hardly wait.

When looking for reel post for this reel Scott's bait and tackle noted using 501 post as replacement part.
