Bought this reel from Randy here on the boards, Vintage Offshore Tackle, purchased at the Fred Hall Show in Long Beach.

Randy really is the nicest guy, and great to deal with. I am in love with this reel, really robust and strong. Going to be my go to 30-40# reel....My new favorite reel!!!

Thank you again Randy!

Very nice, looks like a beastly reel.  Let us know how she performs.

Here is a quick break down of my 7530, mini service and change out of the 4.7:1 gears for the 3.3:1.

Calling it a mini service because I already broke the reel down when first purchased, full strip down and greasing. Now fixing the small issues I came across, spool bearings were slightly rusted, pinion was slightly frozen into the drag plate, and the handle/knob assembly had some corrosion issues.

Found the 3.3:1 gear set, used, from Ken's Custom Reels in Oceanside, Ca. Tiburon also has them available for sale. To convert the reel to an SST model it must be sent to Tiburon, they do not sell kits for the SST upgrade

Here is the reel with side plate taken off, main gear comes off with two screws and pinion pops out of the drag plate once you take the ring and drag plate cover off (three screws on the drag surface of the drag plate.) Pinion was slightly frozen into place, took the drag cover off and with a socket and small hammer gave one light tap to the underside of the pinion gear and out it came.

View of the internals with gear and drag plate removed. Nice alternating double dog setup, very little back play with the handle. There was some salt water intrusion on the CF drag washer, water can and does get in, but instead of buying a new one I flipped the washer over and had a clean un-salted side. Tiburon encourages customers to flip the washer, as did Ken's Custom Reels.

No more service needed, already greased internals and gear shaft with Corrosion-X and Daiwa blue grease, and packed the cam bearing with grease.

Here is a comparison of the 3.3:1 set on the left and 4.7:1 on the right. Main gear of the 3.3 is slightly beefier and a tad bit smaller in diameter, the pinion of the 3.3 is beasty compared to that of the 4.7:1

New main gear and pinion in place, ready to be put back together.

This is the part where I lost the spool shaft spring that sits in-between the handle side spool bearing and drag plate. Took about 10 minutes to find. (It was under my chair.)

Both the spool bearings and spool shaft were slightly rusted, bearing on the handle side was pretty bad, you could hear how rough it was. Here it is with new bearings and cleaned/lubricated spool shaft. Left the washer stack stock --l()()--, there is an additional washer you can add, along with re-organizing the bellevilles, but did not want to mess with it. The washer upgrade configuration gives about an additional 10# of drag, which can easily be handled by this reel, but just not necessary for my application fishing 40# topshots.

Spool shaft is back in, here is a shot of the greased CF washer (Cal's) and the drag surface of the drag plate. You can see pinion bearing, and the three screws that hold the drag plate cover and pinion gear in place.

Shot of the clicker side. The two screws holding the clicker ring in place were frozen from corrosion, I just let them be, I do not use the clicker anyway.

Drag plate and pinion back in place, secured with the metal ring. Ready to be put back together.

Spool back in frame.

Back together, now just going over the handle assembly, greasing and lubricating well. The handle had some corrosion issues, made a loud squeak when turning the handle at speed. Took care of that and secured alan screw with red Loctite. I know some people are not a fan of using Loctite on handles, but I had a knob come of the handle while rock fishing and promised that would never happen again...enter Red Loctite.

Here it is, Tiburon 7530 w/ 3.3:1 gears, ready to fish, and a 40# reel I am proud to own.

Great reel, a little heavy, but this thing can fish 60# no problem, just not enough line capacity; built like a tank, and the gears really are Quick Change, with a well maintained reel (no corrosion) the average fisherman can swap the gears out in less than 5 minutes while sitting the galley.

Free spool with new bearings is about 20 seconds, not bad for un-lubed bearings. I am waiting on an order of TSI and will re-lube all of my reel bearings, will have more than enough free spool.

No drag tests done, I do not have the setup for drag testing.

Love this reel, going to beast some yellowtail and hopefully Tuna. Thanks for looking guys.

Nice looking reel sundaytrucka, in side and out. How is that carbon fiber attached to the spool glued or spring?
Thanks for showing it.

Good looking reel Scott. Nice Service Pictures too.

Nice reel... were there other gear ratios available?

Thank you for the comments guys!

Sal,

Now that you mention it, there is nothing holding the drag washer down to the spool, never thought of that while servicing. Schematics show nothing holds it on/down. Do you think I could run into inherent problems with an unsecured washer against the drag plate?

One thing I found interesting is the pinion gear is set within a flange race/housing, allowing the flange and outer race to absorb all the friction and pressure from the drag curve, or so it seems to me anyway, I am no expert, but believe the pinion bearing can take heavy loads and not crumble like some others can, or those without thrust bearings.

Thank you Daron, just trying to get to the same level Alan's, Sal's, and your pictorial breakdowns are on...

Ben,

There were multiple gear sets available for this reel, each reel when new came with an extra gear set of a different ratio, not sure how that worked logistics wise, given all the different ratios available.

5.9:1
5.3:1
4.7:1
4.1:1
3.3:1
2.8:1

Taken from the original box this reel came in (added this because somebody did not believe me saying there was a 2.8:1 available somewhere, still have not found anybody who has one, even Tiburon.):

very nice! the man wins a wrench!

No Way!!!

I am truly excited about that, and this reel's handle nut works with the Penn wrench.

Thank you Alan!

Very nice write up.  Thank you for sharing.

Regarding the drag washer, the drag washer is held I place from turning based on the hexagonal hub.  Once it's pressed in place, it's highly uunlikely the washer will be dislodged.

:D I talk with every part I send out and each reel I repair so that they perform at the top of their game. :D

Alto Mare

That's what I thought from looking at the pic, that's why I asked. I like everything on that reel, but not crazy about that washer.
This is just my opinion .... what do I know :-\.

Thank you Bryan.

You are correct, the hexagon pattern does somewhat lock the washer in place, more so snugs it in place, but either way it felt secure when pressed in.

Still, as Sal pointed out, the washer is not secured and could pull away from the spool face in adverse conditions to cause such a thing, do not know what that is, but we will find out if it faults.

Going to put 65# Izorline Brutally Strong Spectra, 40# mono topshot.

Thanks again guys.

No, I wouldn't be worried about the washer pulling away, I don't believe that could happen once it is assembled. I am more worried about the washer rounding off on the Octagon. Tiburon, do know their reels, so I'm sure it would hold up just fine. With that said, if it was my reel, I would customize a drag washer with a thin stainless steel washer sandwiched in between, that would make me feel better.
