Possible Drag Washer Chart?

Is there anywhere -- or would it be possible to come up with an "ACTUAL SIZE" drag washer chart for the popular reels like Penn, Shimano, Daiwa, Avet, etc..?

One that shows a drag washer silhouette in actual size for every brand of popular reel.

Along with this information would be OD & ID.

This seems like it would be very useful.

Fred, I have wondered why this info isn't available somewhere here on AT.Com.  I thought I just didn't know where to look.

There are legions of regular Joes like me that could use the chart.

Not surprising to me that you verbalized the idea first.

I have a Daiwa 47H that has been sitting in a tray for a month waiting to match up drags to something already available.

I woke today and suddenly nothing happened.

That chart would be very large.

Maybe y'all knew this already / maybe I'm missing something, but here is a list of all the Penn reels

I think you did miss it a bit Robert.  That is not a chart. And that list is years old. There are literally a hundred reels not listed, or more?  There is no need for a chart of every reel made. But what of the reels we talk about every day here? Where are the common Daiwas? The common Shimanos? Common Pro Gear, Avet, etc?

But what Fred is advocating for is a visual chart with 'to-scale' shadow pics included.  Each size would list the reels it fits and a part # maybe, if already available. ID's & OD's. I'm thinking an editable spreadsheet.

I know if I was in the business that I would already have this info.  ;D

Thanks Robert & Randy --

That is very useful information to work with --

Maybe I am over-thinking the process -- but what I am conceptually envisioning, is --

Maybe a chart above the bench or series of charts in a simple 3 ring binder split up according to brands and models.

This could be laminated.

Information would start with the brand --

Followed by an actual size silouette of the drag washer --

Followed by the reel/reels it would fit --

Followed by a factory part number --

Followed by the OD, ID, and factory thickness --

I guess I could just glue drag samples on a surface to match up washers --

And quite frankly, I know and have most of the common ones we all use memorized.

But this site is all about teaching the new guy, sharing information and clever techniques, and finding that odd set of washers for a reel we seldom work on -- quickly -- with a minimum of hassle.

But for me I am trying to accomplish 2 purposes --

One, to have a dead simple system for quick match ups when I have a reel down and my fingers are greasy.

Two, to be able to simply reproduce the chart for as many as needed one -- to have one.

I am not an engineer -- just a reel mechanic -- and I do not need to get out the digital calipers to match up loose washers with the odd reel.  I do try to be efficient and accurate -- like most of the folks here.

I want the system to work for me -- I do not want to work for the system.

This would likely have to be done in a standard hard copy -- and reproduced without the aid of a computer, or even downloaded -- since the size integrity is the whole point.  But others may have much better ideas.

Just figured someone would have some thoughts to help everyone...

Lets keep thinking about this, gang...we have more experts on this board -- then probably any one of us realizes.

Best,

Fred

Well yes, I do realize that it is not a chart per se. Such a chart would be a great thing to have, but would be so large as to be not a chart, but a booklet or binder as Fred mentions above. As far as this Penn list being years old, yes of course. The reels included therein have not changed, and if other Penn washers have been introduced in the meantime, feel free to add them.

The other list contains other manufacturers, but as can be seen, it didn't gather enough interest at the time.

I'm sure Dawn has a fairly comprehensive list; she must get asked about things like this a hundred times a day.

Just wondering, would an editable spreadsheet be true to scale when printed? I mean, would it be accurate when say you print it at your house on a Lexmark and when someone else prints it at their workplace on a IBM for example?

Since there are so many washers that overlap many different reels, it would be just a matter of tracing that single washer and so on until you have made a template of washers then copy it for production. Next is taking the measurements of older out of production washers and doing the same. There are enough reel owners and repair people to combine there efforts and send there measurements to someone that can copy them to single sheets and reproduce them for everyone. Have I made this to simple?

In my infinite spare time, I could create a 1:1 scale document of the drag washer sizes for Penn and Carbontex so that people could print out and compare so that at least they would know what washers to order to order.

It wouldn't be hard, just time consuming.
:D I talk with every part I send out and each reel I repair so that they perform at the top of their game. :D

If such an item were available for sale, I would certainly buy it.  :)

I think in the long run this will benefit the suppliers as well as the consumers. Those of us who can contribute to this effort can pitch in and help in what ever way we can, The main thing is getting it organized...ie (who can do what)? And how do we start this chart? What material will we need to print this on? What format will we use? There are a lot of talented people on this site who can help with the questions.

HELP!

You definitely would know Dawn, but if we could give someone willing to combine these numbers to paper it would be great. I would be willing to give it the old college try. I may regret saying that, but never the less I,m willing.
