abu 5500 c 3 (99 08) back lashing

Hello........Got a abu that backlashes really bad. Only way to use it is to tighten spool tension all the way. I think it has to do with the brake blocks. Do these little things wear out or just get rearranged or something. Anything else I need to look for when I attempt to break it down. As usual any help would be much appreciated. Thanks. Brad
