So now I have two No. 49's...but a little fuzzy on the date of manufacturing....
o

On the left is a plain tail plate marked "Super Mariner No. 49", with a green marbled counter balanced handle

On the right is a four boat engraved "Deep Sea Reel No. 49" with a non-numbered amber marbled 3 position handle...  I would like to swap parts between them to include the good chrome with the engraved tail plate...or should I just spring for good used chrome parts?  I'm assuming the engraved plate is much older than the plain jane, but how much older....thanks for any input....Bill
It may not be very productive,
but it's sure going to be interesting!

Penn Chronology

Both of your reels have part numbers, so the old one (the one on the right side of the photo) is probably no older than 1951. In 1952, Penn introduced the Penn 49 new name (Super Mariner). So, the reel that says Deep Sea Reel and has part numbers is pre-1952, no earlier than 1950. The reel that says Super Mariner, is post 1952.
