This might be a dumb question but what is the best grease to put between a big game reel and an aluminum rod butt? Are you guys just using regular Penn reel grease, marine grease?

Most of the reels I've worked on, there was grease on the butts already but it did not resemble reel grease. Seemed a bit thicker. Had a smell to it. Had a color similar to Cal's original grease.

Cals works and so does Penn

Regular maintenance is key

Nothing worse than a corroded rod butt. Expect for a corroded reel.

I just had to deal with that. I bought a strap wrench and muscled it off.

Definitely want to keep them greased up.

Thanks. I'll check that out.

The grease I have been seeing seems quite viscous. Seems like that would be important as that part of the reel is going to get splashed.

I use marine wheel bearing grease. If it works on a trailer works on a butt.

Tiddler is most correct.

Just any marine grease. I've been doing that for many years now.

Newell Nut

Don't put a Tiburon in a SS seat without heavy grease. Built a cool Newell for a friend here and he mounted it an old rod with a SS seat without grease and the Tiburon cleat got some very serious pitting in it.
