Thanks guys - when doing this build I noticed I've had two complete head and tail plates off 500L Jigmaster's I bought as donner reels for spare parts etc and have a few bakerlite spools so decided to cut and machine one down to make a budget 501 - basically going through the same process as for the 60 Squidder build .
Cut the shaft and machined a step for the bearing and star ratchet washer and with a hand file took out just enough metal from top and bottom for the star washer to fit  in nice and tight .

Shaft test fit in the spool.

Before and after pics of the spool .

All the bits ready to assemble.

Just about done - Just have to work out how to fix the star to the shaft ???

Enjoy

Good work Matt. Let us know what you come up with as for attaching the ratchet.
That has come up in the past a few times.
Good stuff!

Mattman, I narrowed Mikes spool on this build....

I have a pic on my phone of how I re-attached the ratchet star, but I can't post it right now.
Basically I centre popped the apex of the round on the end of the shaft at the join to the star. One at each apex. Hope this makes sense? Can get a pic up in about a week if need be.

Hi Matt,

I would pull the shaft out and use silver solder brazing to attach the star. You only need a propane torch and nothing else that special.

Great interesting work.
:D I talk with every part I send out and each reel I repair so that they perform at the top of their game. :D

Looks like you are on a roll Matt! - good work (again).
I pulled a 29M-99 spool apart (to swap the chromed brass sides for stainless ones) and also centre popped the star back in place - although Chris (Rothmar2) did a much neater job on the 66N spool. If the star is a tight fit it doesn't take much deformation to secure it, no need to mash the end like I have  :)

Looking at your photos again, I'm not sure about the Bakelite spools - it looks like they rely on the clicker star to hold the spool in place on the shaft. Do you need a keyed spacer under the star to keep it in line with the clicker and the top of the star step on the shaft?

It can't be too difficult - a lot of people do it.

Hi Mike - there is no washer behind the star as it buts up to the face on the step - see pic red arrow below .
I ended up drilling a small hole through the spool and 3/4 into the shaft - Mixed up some 2pot glue - glued it all together and pressed the pin in .
Some glue must have got into the hole and with the air in the hole as well kept on pushing the pin back out - only had to wait a few mins for the glue to set - the pins a we bit high but I can live with that.
As for the star I used red Loctite and pressed it on and wiped off the excess.

"I can live with the high pin"

looks to me like it's a design enhancement...

i've built more than a few things where the way it came out was the 'way i intended it to'

for a lot of years i pointed out the flaws and mistakes in my carpentry...

the customer didn't know it until i told them.

i'm a slow learner on many things

great work btw!

Good solution with the pin Matt, a post to tie your line to and anchoring the spool on the shaft. Thanks for showing a side on shot of the star, I thought there was more space above or below the star.

I'm stunned Matt. Great work.
