Squidder build

I always wanted a smaller Squidder reel for casting irons and baits - alloy spools over here are just about non exsistent - so going through my spares I have a few 140 casting spools with air braking fins and all ar 140 width and got me thinking - I got on hand a newish 30-60 stand and a new set of 185 posts thanks to Raumati01
Worked out the difference between the 140 and the 285 posts and was just over 16mm.
Another thing about this build - I've always wanted to pull a Penn spool apart and see how they work from the inside and I have one that has got a few chips on the spool lip handle side so here i go.

1st pic - had to grind the metal lock washer that that holds everything together
2nd pic all went well and its off - no glue on the shaft but what looks like thick dark green grease - sorry pic didn't turn out to good.




3rd and 4th pics The spool pulls apart i two - one side has three nipples and three holes - the other side has three holes that the nipples locate into . I drilled the existing holes down to 12mm to both halves - a 3.5mm drill was a good fit then cut 9mm off one end and 7mm off the other -- had the spool in the lath and used a hacksaw .





put a step into the shaft and cut a 6 mm X1mm pitch thread in the lath - put the frame together and tested the shaft in the frame - every thing seems to work as it should in gear and out of gear - cut 16mm off the non handle side and shaped the end that goes into the ft can be used with or without the clicker ratchet washer.









Back to the spool - I had to re drill all the holes down to 10mm on each side  and cut a new slot to tie the line into - found some 3.5mm alloy rod and cut to 19mm and chamfered all the ends and fitted to the spool and test fitted - didn't like the gap in the middle of the spool so put each halves in the lath and skimmed the mating faces - Test fitted again and cant see any daylight through - where the gap was .

I put some thick grease on the shaft and fitted into the spool - fitted the star and made up som packers to hold it in the center - a drop of red loctite and screwed the nut in fairly tight - Tested the spool in the frame and every thing works sweat and I suppose you could call it a 145 .5 Squidder and fills the gap between the 145 and 146 .

Thanks for the reply's guys I took the reel down to my practice spot - fixed it to my 12 foot kilwell blue and am getting a 4oz torpedo way over halfway across the Wanganui river and a 3oz nearly 3/4  . From where im standing its a 169 meters to the bank on the other side .
The new build in between the 140 and 146 Squidder.
