Okay, is there a trick to removing the bearing sheild from this type of bearing?   I cannot get this thing off to grease it.

If it will not pop off easily -- just punch a hole in it with a pic -- pull the shield with a hook -- then throw the shield away.  Sometimes I do it on both sides -- more often I just do one side -- clean it with lacquer thinner or lighter fluid -- flush it -- then regrease with Yamaha Marine or Penn Blue -- install it back using the one good shield as somewhat of a protection barrier.

The shields are not as necessary as a good cleaning and grease job.
