My buddy who isn't a fisherman gave me a handful of old rods and reels last year that he cleaned out of a storage unit. A few Mitchells and metal Zebco's in the lot and most of the rods are of tomato stake variety from the Sixties, but one caught my attention and I thought it's make a good ole skool pencil popper rod. No markings but my guess is early 70's Magnaflex. I would have kept it as-was, but the stripper had been replaced with nothing approximating original thread, and also a crappy tip. So I gave my take on things.

Very nice work John! I've got a bunch of old classics here and all I need is the time to get to them. Looks great with the Mitchell!

Finished product, with a pristine Mitchell 406, one of my favorites and period correct for this build. I dipped into the stash of Stren Hi-Vis Gold as it seemed the right thing to do....you can't see that closely but the diamond wrap, which is silver and blue to match the reel, has a single X-pass of honey gold thread in it to tie in the blank and the Stren.

Hi, my name is John, and I am a tackle ho. There, I said it.

Fantastic work on the rod and great photos! Probably didn't look that good when it was new!

It may not be very productive,
but it's sure going to be interesting!

Hey now...I'm diggin' that Stren gold on the 406...If I can find any I'll string up my 406. Might even have to find a rod that looks similar...great job John! 8)

beautiful  job  john,  i built rods 35 years ago for a tackle shop friend and for customers in the babylon tuna club i had belonged to,  amazing the nice work we can turn out.  now a days you can buy a beautiful rod for a fraction of the cost of building one, the parts have gone crazy, but you get satisfaction in turning out a masterpiece. i built small spinning and boat rods up to 130 lb. with aluminum butts.  but that's all behind me now.  being handicapped i can't boat fish because i get around on my scooter, i can fish off a dock on my scooter ,but all you do is drown your bait, dock fishing here isn't good, so the next best thing is spending hours repairing, rebuilding and making reels in mint operating and apperance condition, thank god for this addiction or i would be going crazy or wasting away in my recliner, of which i don't want to do.  great job, take care my friend

Mo, Stren stopped making Stren Gold a couple of years ago. They now make Stren Catfish Mono in Fluorescent Orange. It glows under black light at night & glows in daylight. I use it in saltwater.       Rudy

Yep...that was why I said I'd try to find some. I have some on an old Ambassaduer 5000, but aside from that I haven't seen any around these parts for ages. I'll have to try that orange too.
