Your problem is caused by using an improper or inferior handle arm wrench....

I'm not sure that Alan's wrench fits the Levelmatic reel . . .

I have 5 of these reels in different sizes. They are not easy to work on if you do a full disassembly. They just take longer.

If you need anything for your reel I have many NOS parts for them.
