so, talking about AR dogs.

whats the odds of having the two AR dogs fail at the same time on this reel?

I have this same reel model with that problem, both dogs were stuck in the open position letting the handle the turn backwards everytime.

the wings or springs on the dogs looked good but were bent enough to dont work.

I cleaned the posts where the dogs sit, I also bent back the springs a bit and now they seem to work just fine.

So, (question to everyone) On your experience, would you use the reel as is right now or better buy a new set of AR dogs?

What happens with these reels is the pinion gear sticks in the drag plate when you take them apart, so the anti-reverse ratchet gets pulled out through the "wings" on the dogs when you take the side off and bends them upward, they never quite spring back right. Getting the balance correct between not adding excessive grippyness that is felt when reeling and having the dogs consistently grab the anti reverse ratchet is really difficult. I've found that re-shaping the wings by putting a thin screwdriver shaft between the wings then pinching the ends together can be reasonably effective.

yep, I know what you mean, it happened to me with other reels

Depending on the set-up, you might be able to install a little spring behind the gripper-type AR dog.  A belt and suspenders sort of thing.

Also, the gripper-type spring requires a little bit of back play to make it engage. A regular spring-loaded dog will fall into place on the ratchet at the first opportunity.

If you're going to make the dogs spring loaded (and thus make the reel click, eww >:D ) you may as well peel the wings off and have zero friction.

Agreed Boon, as long as it doesn't need the wings to keep the dog stable on its post.  Thin dog material may wobble on the post.

if the reel was mine I would try to do it, but the owner wants the silent dogs, so...

my trinidad 40 has double clicking dogs and are loud !! as you know, trinidad reels have those same silence dogs (abu garcia style)
