Who builds a reel around a spool? ???  A plastic spool at that? :o  Me, hee hee, that's who! ;D  Sometimes a fellow just takes a likin' to something, especially when fleabay gives it up for 99 cent! So then I needed a reel...
The Surfy 150 came with a nice aluminum spool and seemed a great platform for this project. Inside it looked fine, but being a newer model it had a brass main gear and knowing I wanted a little muscle under the hood I swapped it out for a steel gear. I also used a 2nd generation AT ss gear sleeve and pulled a few washers from one of Bryan's 5-stack kit to make an under gear set. This 4 stack setup works great for adding a few pounds of drag without being too much for a stock reel. The first photo shows the gearing setup. The second pic sports the two spools...speckled brown bakelite for show...black aluminum for go. The third and fourth shots try to convey the beauty of Lou's acrylic knob, a tough job, as it changes appearance with movement. This little Surfmaster performs as well as it looks...just like a hotrod should. 8)

Here's a few closer looks...note how Lou's knob changes with light angle.

Mo that is a very nice looking 150, I'm liking the sleeperish builds you do. I'm thinking about a similar sleeper build off of a 500s, keep the stock look but pump up the guts!

Btw is that a moly steel gear😬

Nicely done Mo! The whole combo looks excellent. I'm really starting to like those 2 tone spotted spools.

Top shelf work as usual and the knob looks great with the polished handle. 8)

Have a good evening,  ..  Lou

Very nice looking reel Mo,Be hard to take that one off the shelf. What pound line are you using? Looks pretty sweet for 20lb. Sheridan
Do what you can with that you have where you are

Forget about all the reasons why something may not work. You only need to find one good reason why it will.

Thank You much fellas. That was 30lb. I spooled on Sheridan, for catfishing, if I ever fish this reel it would be for cats.

Nice job Mo.  Good catfishing.  Dominick
Leave the gun.  Take the cannolis.

There are two things I don't like about fishing.  Getting up early in the morning and boats.  The rest of it is fun.

Rancanfish

That's a beaut, Mo.

I have a couple 150's that I built and added Tib frames.  Great size reel.
I woke today and suddenly nothing happened.

Mo, I don't like that combo... I LOVE IT! Great forward thinking on having the spool match the handle so perfectly.
Awesome job and Lou does amazing work.
Thanks for sharing,
Dom
