thanks in advance, really want to find out why I had so much trouble, Im sure it was my own ignorance about the reel but drives me nuts !

You had everything right, Tom --

Just the white nylon bearing cup that the top bearing rides in (key part 41) -- was upside down on the topside of the bearing -- it just needed to be oriented so that it was under the bearing.

That was why it was not flush with the body -- and the metal cover was raised 1/16".

Amazing how close those are to the Penn's, Keith.
