I was on the John Deere, mowing on the back 40 and came across this!

Got off the machine and it looked to be a perfect circle. Paced the outer diameter at around 12 feet, the inner diameter around 10' which made it about a foot in width. I keep the grass short back there as it seems to lessen the ticks and other insects.

You can definitely see the brown ring although it didn't photograph well. Went to get Gracie to make sure I wasn't seeing things and she was quite surprised and somewhat alarmed. She immediately called her sister!

If it were done by machinery there was nothing leading in or out.

If the grass were longer it would have definitely shown up better. I mowed about a week prior and saw nothing.

Any idea's??? Maybe there coming for me. (lol)

Leave the gun.  Take the cannolis.

There are two things I don't like about fishing.  Getting up early in the morning and boats.  The rest of it is fun.

It's a soil fungus commonly called fairy rings, I think the name is rhizoctonia at least that's what causes it out here. Normally see it in grasses with rhizomes like st. Augustine. Or it's a UFO
Do what you can with that you have where you are

Yup! I get that Dominick but I thought there might be a logical explanation! ;D ???

Your land was not likely always clear, Lou --

Old timers have said that sometimes where a tree was taken out -- as the root system rots out below ground -- the mold, mildew, rotting root mass, and remnants of the tree form a ring.

Signs might be excess moisture, not enough moisture, subterranean termites, or a fungus -- this is commonly called fairy rings.

Just a theory.

Or look for a "L" and a "U" also...

Thanks Swami and Fred. It just seemed odd that I hadn't seen it the week before. Mr D., If it's a mole running in circles he's got on heck of an eye or a big compass!

Anyways, its a new one on me!!!!

PS its was all farmland for years, mostly corn and hayfields.

Check Google Maps satellite view, zoom in and see if it's visible there. A lot of times those sort of things are visible on an aerial view but you don't notice them when you're on the ground. Try to date the aerial view by things in the surroundings. The date at the bottom isn't when it was taken. They're usually a year or more old.
Love those open face spinning reels! (Especially ABU & ABU/Zebco Cardinals)

I've been chasing those blasted moles here lately Lou.
It was the first think that popped in my head.
I get them eventually.
I have a spike trap that works pretty well, it just takes patience.
They dig around it, go through it, but don't trip it.
Usually about the third time, with a hair trigger on the trap.
I get him.
The spikes are about 6" long, three on either side.
Just joking my friend. ;)
