I started tinkering with a post 1990 Seaboy 185 and 190 before the kidney stone problems and finally got around to spooling them with 50# Spectra and testing the drag.   I am getting 15#+ drag on both reels and I am not sure the 30-85 and 30-65 stand can handle this much drag.  Is there a stronger stand that fits these reels?  Any aftermarket stand fit the 185?  I want to use these for mid depth Pacific halibut, 150'-300'.

Hi, my name is Lee and I have a fishing gear problem.

I have all of the answers, yup, no, maybe.

the gears will likely hold up, but the top of the gear sleeve will round off first.  15 pounds is alot of pressure!
send me an email at alantani@yahoo.com for questions!

A base off a 220 or 322 Newell fits so I would image a base for a 146 or 100 penn would fit too. Aluminum Newell would be stronger but graphite one would be ok
Do what you can with that you have where you are

Would a 112H stand fit the 190?
Can't think of a replacement for the 30-85 - you could always get a couple of 2mm thick spacer/adaptors to use a 501 stand and bars. http://alantani.com/index.php?topic=17297.0

It can't be too difficult - a lot of people do it.

Didn't try it but a base and bars from a 506 should fit a 185. Those bars would look pretty slick too

I put SS gearsleves in them.

A #30-66 clamping stand will fit the 190. Also...an old LB 60 clamping stand should fit the 185...but they are sorta hard to find. 8)

I think I have a 30-66 in my used parts pile.  The 185 will be the hard one to find and that's the preferred reel out of the 2.

The 185 looks to be close to 99 width and I know I have a 30-99 somewhere.  It looks like the 30-66 works on the 190.  I will dig out a 112H stand and try it today.

The 185 is the same as the 60 I'm pretty sure. That's the pita that I haven't figured out.

Well there goes the 99 stand.

The 30-185 is slightly narrower than the 30-60.  It is unusual for Penn to not use preexisting parts.

Lee, I'm a little confused (not hard to do) - I had a look at MysticParts listings and only found two 185 reels - the 'post 1990' 185 Seaboy which uses a 30-85 stand and a 29L-85 spool that also fits the 60, 85, 2/0 (spool only) and others. Like Mo said, the older 60 stand with clamps would be a stronger stand for this reel but you would be competing with the collectors if you found one.

The other 185 listed on Scott's is the "up to 1970's" 185 Baymaster that used a 30-180s stand which can be replaced with a 30-49 stand (same as 501, 506, 100, 146 etc) and it uses a 29L-100 spool (same as 100 & 146) This one sounds like the reel Sheridan showed us earlier with stippled side plates, that he had upgraded with a Newell stand.

Was there another 185 between the 'post 1990' Seaboy and the 'up to 1970's' Baymaster?
