Bearings

I was cruising fleabay and came across "FastEddy" bearing sets..rubber sealed..was thinking maybe I could replace the bearings in my CU-201 Bantam..anyway,anyone familiar with them? Are they junk?

search for a post by Exp2000.  I think he tried them once and IIRC he wasn't that impressed.

No ball bearings are completely sealed.  The shield just keeps out the large grit but water still gets inside.  When it comes to maintenance, open bearings have their advantages.  Fast Eddy sells chrome plated bearings that will not last.

On some you could actually remove the balls and clean them individually, but you need to do it carefully

Seals only keep the grease in and the dirt out (kinda).  Nothing keeps the water out whilst still allowing the shaft to spin freely.

furthermore, if it's better at keeping water out, it's better at keeping water in when it eventually gets through
it's a Catch 22!

from the ease of maintenance perspective, I really like the open bearings (or single-shielded w/ shields facing out, if sand is an issue)

There's moisture in the air when they're build so there's some water in there unless they're built in a zero humidity environment. Not likely. A water molecule is a very interesting thing. They like to find other molecules and bind together, They form a very strong bond too.
Anyway open bearings are way easier cleaned and even with a rubber seal more water is likely to get in.
