So this came in today... a direct drive custom Penn 209.  Anyone ever see this before?  The guy that sent it to me says his father who was an machinist at Boeing used to make these for a now closed fishing tackle shop in Seattle.  https://flic.kr/p/23rwh9Z

What's a direct drive as it refers to the reel?
:D I talk with every part I send out and each reel I repair so that they perform at the top of their game. :D

No drag. Unless there was some odd dog arrangment the handle would have spun backward. Ooops just looked again the anti reverse gear looks like it has been touched by dogs. ... Jeff

Probably a 209 modified to operate like a 109.  The 109 does not have an eccentric jack or yoke.  The eccentric lever just disengages the AR dog.  When the dog is disengaged the handle turns backward but you can stop the handle with your hand and line will pull out against the drag.  When the dog is engaged the handle does not turn backward and line will pull out against the drag.  When casting the handle spins backward on a 109 but not on a stock 9, 209 or 309 (which have eccentric jack and yoke).

If there are drag washers  doesnt look like there is room for much... Jeff

There has to be some type of heavy coiled spring in there. Andy, could you take it apart? I've never seen anything as such.

Sal
Forget about all the reasons why something may not work. You only need to find one good reason why it will.

Sal: It is soaking today and I will see if it comes apart.  At first try no go.  Almost looks like it was pressed into the gear...more to come this weekend..

Andy, try not to break it, I won't feel good about that :). If it doesn't budge, I would let it go.

Cant say I'm all that interested in duplicating as much as I'm just curious to understand how it works... Jeff

Am I seeing this correct? It looks like the gear is turned around backwards on the gear post...it looks like the drag washer cutout is showing there at the top. ???
