Old post but..Looks like when using heavy jigs he put the hook in the rod hook keeper or top crossbar and let the jig hang lower and hit the bottom crossbar.
I'm not talkin' 'bout pleasure boatin' or day sailin'. I'm talkin' 'bout workin' for a livin'. I'm talkin' 'bout sharkin'!

yeah, probably a barb from a hool that dug into the crossbar.
