Mitchell 300 question..

Got an old 300 that the bail trip assembly is hitting the baffle plate tab that trips the bail.  Hits it every time it comes around making a clicking sound.
I tried tweaking the battle plate tab a bit but it doesn't help.  I have only 1 shim and 1 washer under there, could it be a shim issue?  I know these Mitchell like their shims...any ideas?  Thanks, Joe.

It will take (2) shims — sometimes (3) plus the washer.

And, once the proper amount of shims are in place — you can adjust the baffle plate tab by tweaking it.

Just like Goldilocks — not too much, not too little...just right.

Don't you love how Mitchell used shims, trial and error, and guesswork — instead of good materials and attention to tolerances — to tune their reels?

No kidding Fred,  we don't see these shims in the DQ's!

It is sooo hard to offer suggestions without being able to see the reel.  Here are a few you might try:
1. Check the baffle plate and make sure it is not warped by placing it on a piece of glass or something.
2. Make sure the anti-inertia brake is not hitting something.
3. Definitely start w/two shims and washer under baffle plate and one shim between rotating head and reel housing. (Remember the shims go on first then the washer so that the washer is touching the baffle plate.
4. If you are able to remove the Axel yourself then remove it and take off the Hex nut holding the baffle plate on.  Inspect the bail trip lever, spring, and their screws.  Make sure screws are snug.  Check the counter weight and make sure its screw(s) are installed correctly and snug.
