 I liked spool that I did on page 4 , that I found some more spools .    3 are 720-722 and 3 more of the 712 Z .

The 720 will drop right in without cutting the skirt ,but it is also a little smaller in diameter by .050 thousants .   Also the drag stack sits a little lower in the well and the drag nut does not hit it .  This is a easy fix , add more drag washers ,or change the frictions for thicker ones.

  I am J B welding this set , instead of using washers .   Waiting for J B to set up some , than I can do little more clean up with a razor blade .

  I will start off with the 720 spool first .  The spool is a tick taller than a stock 220 spool.
     Believe it or not it helps with fixing the hourglass effect , and very braid friendly.

     The skirt is smaller in diameter than the 220. Which by the way has a lot of variances , I have in front of me several that range from 2.158- 2.176 .  It may work that way , but a quick fix is a rubber band . I may use contact cement to hold it in place to test with .   First two pictures .   Third picture is the clicker , needs to be cut a litte , too long .

  Forth picture is the drag stack , to make it to the top of the well .    Happy testing

Just happen recently , fought a stingray that looked like the hood of my truck early in the day , than later fought a black drum about 34-37 inch ,lost him at the boat .

  After cleaning the boat ,I started on the rods . The 220 that caught the 2 biggest fish , the drag was still locked down .  After loosing it and washing it I hear pop and see a coil spring of mono . Jacked the spool !    Who is going to spot it ..... :fish


I have a few new aluminum spools to finish up.

Hi Joe,

I recently acquired a 221 that was seized. After a thorough clean and lube the reel works well, however, the spool is a wreck!  The rim has broken off leaving jagged edges rendering it unusable.  So I was very interested to see what you've done using a Penn 720 spool!  Have you done any further testing of this?

I really appreciate the advice and guidance from this board!  Huge help in trying to restore and use vintage reels!

Yes on the testing .  the 720 - 722 with the rubber band on the rim didn`t work well .  I did add JB weld to build up the diameter instead of the rubber band .     This spool will take a lot of drag frictions to fill the cup .   720 is on the left and 712z on the right .

    What kind of fishing do you do and what type of line do you like , momo or braid ?

I don't fish nearly as much as I'd like to, but when I do, its usually for bass or pike.  Locally in PA or in southern Ontario.

I'd envisioned using braid on the 221, but I have reels spooled with either one.  But to get to that point I need to find a workable spool.   I do have a complete 220, so using the spool from that reel is certainly an option.  I am a bit nervous about using the plastic spool based on the its condition as well as the pictures you've posted!  Obviously bass and pike don't fight like rays, but I can see the spool getting banged around in the bottom of the boat!

Essentially, yes.  Ideally I'd like to find a way to create a metal spool for the 221.  In my limited experience the aged plastic spool seems to be the 'weak link' in the reel.

I always wish to have 220,221 spool that have bigger washer ,more drag surface less capacity is OK as brad line is much thinner
