What is this...DAM Quick 550 Tournament Surf Long Cast
How would this even work? I can't imagine the oscillation arm of a 550 would clear half of that spool! If anyone is willing to buy this, can you take it apart to see that oscillation system?

Here's the listing. I can't imagine anyone buying this, but the current bid is 300 euro and its STILL GOING!

Tournament distance casting.  You manually switch between bail positions.  Probably  just the spool/ cap and bail are customized.

Early versions of this spool on other reels are sometimes called "wedding cake" spools.  I'm sure Fred will pop up out of the snow pretty soon.

No snow right now, sunshine a bit, 15" of rain since Christmas, some snow but gone now.

Just above us, the snowpack for the Sierra is at 203% of average for this time of year.

Much cooler weather over the next 3 months would be a great help.

Another (2) storms predicted to start later tonight and run through at least next Wednesday or longer.

I have never gotten involved with the tournament distance casting reels and spools.

I do know that both DAM Quick & Mitchell —- plus maybe some other European Reel Makers offered these.

Not of any interest to me —- the reels I work on and build out are hopefully destined for either actual fishing —- or a collectors item.

These are a niche —- and interesting.

Dave is correct on these —- you just manually start the line retrieve at the South level of the spool —- then when full —- switch to the North level to complete the spool fill.

I think using 1-2 lb. test, and a 2-3 ounce weight, and a long rod —- a cast of 500 or 600 yards can be attained.  Just guessing?

It's actually a 330, not a 550. Not sure about inards changes to the Dam tournament example but here's a discussion regarding the ABU Garcia tournament reel I'm holding in my avatar.

The spool on my ABU was factory made by ABU, as were the specialty inards.

The spool and drag knob on the Dam were most likely custom made, probably by Bill Burke (RIP).

Actually, the asking price isn't that bad. I've been offered 3X that for mine.

He did make a spool for this DQ 1001 and the spool shown on this Mitchell 900 is his work.  N o telling how much of his work is undocumented.

Thanks for the clarification. My impression of long cast reels was that they always used worm oscillation so this was an eye opener. But why would DAM not make a specialised reel body and use a 330 instead as the base? I think Daiwa made a dedicated model for long casting back then

They were trying to promote their regular stock back then. That was long before Asian made reels were taken seriously.

Yes, the DAM Quick 330 was available with two tournament spools at the end of the 60s.
But with this one, the counterweight to the line guide is wrong.



I can't say exactly whether the coil is original, the coil would have to be in front of me so I can measure it.

I get the massive spool's purpose now but why is there also another huge tumour where the drag knob should be? I assume that huge spool is hollow inside and the drag washers go there.

There are no brake discs, the spool is only for tournament sports, for example long-distance casting.
The red cap houses the push button device.
