Hello all. I just installed some new smooth drag carbon fiber washer on my star drag Speedmaster. When I loosen the star drag all the way, I still have considerable drag pressure and resistance when cranking the handle. When I tighten down the star, the handle resistance goes away. Any way to correct this?

The carbon fiber washers were slightly thicker than the existing washers.  You can
1) find thinner carbon fiber washers or CF sheets to cut your own.
2) You could lap one or all of the CF washers on sandpaper to reduce their thickness.
3) You could also just remove one the carbon fiber washers and see what that gives you.
4) Just in case, you could first try holding down the spool and cranking the reel against a heavy drag until the CF seat themselves and begin to wear.

Thank you for the info. I will give one or two of these suggestions a try.

Yip, agreed.   To test it replace one of the new ones with a thinner old one or any thin one and see if the problem goes away.

Usually dawns stuff is pretty spot on. Are you sure you don't have something in the wrong order? Rule out the easy stuff.
Any machine is a smoke machine if you use it wrong enough.

the drag stack is too thick.  the last time this happened to me, i was because i forgot to remove the drag washer under the main gear before adding the new one.  my bad.

Thanks, guys. I confirmed everything was installed correctly and the old thin washers were all removed.  I'm gonna try to sand down one or two of the washers.
