Took my new LB 65 fishing this morning.  I got one nice bluefish in then the reel just stopped.  Got it home and discovered my problem.  Guess the old plastic just didn't have any strength yet.
So my first question is, I assume the later metal spools are interchangeable with the plastic ones?
2nd question, anybody have a spare they'd want to part with?  The replacements on ebay cost twice as much as a whole reel.

But hey, at least we got the fish in!

The attached shows no plastic spool for the 65, which leaves me wondering if a previous owner put in the one you broke as a "well it seems to sorta fit and work okay" replacement that was doomed to fail. All I see for the 65 is a metal 29M-65 part number spool.  Are there any part numbers on the broken one?

My understanding is that the very earliest LB's (1940's?) had a plastic spool. It also had leather drag washers.
No part number that I can find.

The SeaBoy 190 pool fits. $27.00 at mystic. A great upgrade is the stainless 66 stand that supports a clamp $13 at mystic and then you decide on the clamp.

The issue is, this has to be a passion project. You can literally spend hundreds of dollars on this reel, but you can buy a much better reel for much less money on the used market. To be clear, I believe in passion project and fish them often, to the chagrin on the Boss :)

If you just want to get this reel back on the water, buy the spool and give it a good service if you haven't already. If you like this spool size and want to upgrade, find an old 112H.

Fill the 85 almost to the top with Spectra or Daccron with 100 or so feet of mono on top of the braid, mono will blow apart the old plastic spools.

The luck was all mine.
No idea when it broke but my son had just reeled in a 3-4# bluefish, which i had to handline the last 20' or so due to the planer. When we switched over to sight casting it wouldn't reel, and of course I blamed my son.
Also fished my OC 112 that also handled a similar sized blue and is making some noise afterward, but that also is problem for another day. This was the first trip for all 3 reels under my ownership, and were just serviced.

How would braid solve/prevent this problem

Doesn't stretch. Mono stretches.

I've seen someone pop a watermelon with rubber bands. Never seen it done with twine.

The old plastic spools were pre-mono and were designed for the old linen lines. Mono stretches and will relax when wound back on the spool putting pressure on the sidewalls of the spool. When the spool is plastic that doesn't end well! Braid doesn't stretch so doesn't expand when put back on the spool under pressure.

The 29M-60 spool is common and I might have one in my shop but I am running behind and most likely will not have time to look this week and will be fishing 10/20-10/30. I will try to get to my shop and look, if not and you do not get one before 11/2 send me a PM to remind me to look.
