112H with handle wobble

Got a 112H yesterday that I hope to put into service next summer.  Only issue at this time is the handle has a bit more wobble in it than I would like, where the "stem" of the handle is fixed to the arm. Do I just simply need to peen around the brass ferrule/rivet on the arm side?

Given the nature of the issue, it's a little bit of of both, but the side-to-side is more pronounced.

looks like you need a new handle, they're avaiable from mystic reel parts. if you really want to keep the torpedo handle, those might be available from mystic, or somebody on this site.

Pretty sure I have one. PM your address; I'll check this weekend. I've tried to peen these, as have others, but I'm as subtle as a flamethrower and crack the bakelite.

Ok I was picturing the gear sleeve moving. If John doesn't have a new handle for it I have a few.

My advice would be to joyously accept johns gift of a new handle.

And also if the hole for the gear sleeve is intact, consider this as an opportunity to drill out the existing knob and add an aftermarket knob.

I definitely plan to accept the gift. But I am curious, has anyone ever tried to solder the opening and fill the void space?  I do a lot of lantern and camp stove repair so I've gotten pretty good at it.

Do those lanterns have parts that need to spin freely? Miss by just a little bit and it won't spin anymore.

But what the heck, by all means try. You already have an already non-functional part to test it on, and the equipment to do it. You've got nothing whatsoever to lose.

Correct, I have to take care and not solder too much.  Biggest issue will be getting it clean enough for the solder to flow.  Is there an easy way to get the knob off and back on?

If you grind off the "mushroom" you can yank it out. Some people drill all the way thru. No harm in it. I don't bother cutting unnecessary metal so I grind it off. I've done it about 20 different ways. the best  uses what you have available. My preference is to use my bench grinder to remove as much of the mushroom as I can, and when I get closer to the handle I switch to an engraving bit on the Dremel. You can tape to prevent scratches but there's a washer going under the screw anyway and that covers even the worst scratches.
