good morning!
Thank you Alan for accepting me into the group.
I live in Uruguay and a few days ago I received from my cousins, the reel that belonged to my grandfather and with which my father fished his entire life, a penn 160
It is in bad condition, but I am going to repair it and take it fishing again, and I would like to give it to my son.
Reading about repairs I discovered your site and here I am learning.
greetings to all!

That thing looks like the start of a good before/after picture. Welcome aboard! We're here to help.

Welcome aboard, Oliver!

Looks like a good project.

For sure, it will need a complete clean-up along with a head plate replacement, and a new drag stack, and a new under gear washer.  Then it should be fishable with proper lubrication and adjustments.

A worthy project, lots of good advice on here to get it going again.

He put a lot of work into making staples and putting the head plate back together.  I know I couldn't do it.  It almost seems a shame to replace it.

Thanks all for your repplies!
i bought a donor reel with the same head plate, and new interior parts, and washers, as the dog spring, that was modidied and hand made.
Yes, it was in my mind to keep it this way in a drawer, but, finnaly i decided to repair it and use it.
I remember a day, in Punta del este 45 years ago, when my father got a medium size hammerhead fish.
I never heard of hammerhead fish in my country but well, it happened.
Then that night, It was cut crosswise breaded and fried, The whole family ate it and it remained like an indelible story
My brother inherited a passion for fishing, I love it and we go fishing together sometimes, but he has gone to the Amazon, and we have both gone several times to "corrientes" in Argentina, 7 hours by car from Montevideo, the capital of uruguay.
There you catch the "dorado", and the "surubi", big and fighter fishes, and other large river animals.
Fishing in Uruguay, especially for us, is in the Atlantic Ocean, coastal fishing, or boat fishing, "Corvinas", dogfish, sole, "brotola",  and in some places in rivers "dorado" and "tararira", catfish...
I'll keep the original spool, seems in good condition, i thought may be i can replace both right and left bearings, but i'll try the originals, just to see....is a good idea or is a must to replace?
Thanks all!!

The plain bearings are tougher than roller/ball bearings but still wear out.  If they are sloppy replace them.
