The Amazon deal is weird. Estimated delivery is February 7-17. Only returnable until Jan 31?

Why do they call it a "composite" rod.  That could be anything.

I think combos are marketed to novices who don't know what they like yet.

75 for battle III and spool is a deal even if you toss the rod.

"Composite" is a common term for  a combination of carbon fiber and fiberglass in the blank.

My favorite lightweight conventional rod build for Baja is on a a Rainshadow composite blank.  Another favorite for me is the Calstar Grafighter series.  And my favorite bluewater fly rods are composites with predominantly  S-glass in the lower section, making them superior fish fighting tools compared to other fly rods.

Composites are usually not the lightest blanks in a given category, but the difference may not be that much if the glass is used strategically.

I don't have any opinion on the Penn Battle rods, but when I see "composite" in the description, I am more likely to give the stuff a look.

It's misleading.  Composite can mean any material that is impregnated with resin and cured to hold its shape.  There is composite lumber, siding, boats etc.

jurelometer

Yeah,  a composite material is technically something made from more than one material.  Plywood is a composite. Carbon fibers and epoxy is a composite, and so on. So all modern fishing rod blanks are technically composites.

But it seems pretty common  that when "composite" is used to describe a fishing rod blank, it means that the blank has a carbon/glass/epoxy composite construction.

It would be nice if they just used the more accurate "carbon/glass construction" in the description, but it just doesn't sound as fancy.

Agreed.  Thank you.

I always knew my canoe is a composite material.  Now I realize that it is also a composite in another sense; carbon fiber and fiberglass in the same product.

MarkT

Saying composite is like saying cocktail... you know it contains more than one thing but you don't know what they are.  Glass (e-glass or s-glass), graphite, carbon, boron, kevlar... choose any 2 or more.
