Did penn ever make a PUM for the 712?

Don't believe one was ever made by Penn, James —-

Should be a few sellers on eBay offering something that will work.

I generally just cut and grind off the bail wire or use part of a kit from a 700/704.

The trick in these modifications is to keep the original bail mount so that the right height will not affect proper line-lay.

Lots of anglers chunking heavy baits in surf conditions just do a mod or they even use a PUM (manual pick up) from a Penn 700/704/Mitchell 306, or similar.

Lots of ways to accomplish this.

Use a friction washer to keep the bail mount stationary.

Main thing is line lay and rotational rotor balance.

Here shows a 704 on the left with the bail wire cut off.

Right side is a 704 with the factory PUM.

Middle is a 712 with a 704/700 PUM & the smaller line guide that goes with a 710/712 for best line lay.

I've never heard of a factory or OEM PUM specifically for the 710 or 712 but Penn did make PUM conversion kit for the 700/702 beginning around '63/'64. Don't know if it would work on a 710 or 712, though.
Love those open face spinning reels! (Especially ABU & ABU/Zebco Cardinals)
