I was servicing a perfectly fine Shimano Speedmaster 12 2 speed.  Got it back together but freespool is completely missing.

Any idea where I should begin in order to diagnose and fix this?  I've done it all over again with the same result and can't seem to spot where I goofed up. I may also have made things worse by trying to ratchet the drag lever before screwing the dial on to see if that made any diff

Appreciate any help.  Thanks, John.

Do you mean it stays in gear with the lever all the way down? Is there any increase/decrease in drag pressure when moving the lever?

Yes, it stays in gear with the lever in the free position and yes, drag pressure seems to change with lever movement.  But it doesn't free spool and the drag increase does not feel right.

sometimes is the placement of the freespool lever during assembly.  the freespool lever has to be in the free position, then the cam is installed to that it nests, then the preset knob.

or it could be something else entirely......   :-\

I had the size 8. It resides with Donnyboat in Western Oz now. I went through it once but can't recall the exact drag lever arrangement. The schematic was a big help when I did it. How about the drag lever cam, I've had a tendency to put them in upside-down on other leverdrag reels.

Found it!  Somehow the O Ring TGT2575 got pinched and a section of it was caught between the spool and the frame, thereby impeding lateral movement as well as spool spin.

Thanks for helping me figure it out.  John
