Hey all!

Another unique and oh, so, sweet vintage reel on the bench!

I'm very thrilled to have this rare reel and can't wait to get it functional.

This time it's a Allcock Duplex ambidextrous spin reel.
 Mfg. 1932
S.Allcock and Co. Ltd
 Reddich, England

Another stateside score!

The unique ambidextrous ability of this reel is achieved by loosening the brass slot screw at the base of the foot stem, where it is attached to the butt end of the reel body, and then just rotating the entire body 180°, to place the handle on the opposite side. Easy peasy. No cover plate/ handle gear swap overs, needed!

 Crazy smart! Love it!

Sweet stamped brass body shell with cast aluminum foot stem and flier.
Aluminum spool, as well.

It has a finger actuated bail that is spring loaded and can be locked open, during cast, by placing the bail arm finger tab on the bail, behind a small brass horn on the foot stem.

Upon retrieval, the finger tab slips free from behind the stem horn, flips closed via the spring load, and proceeds to wind the line on the spool.

Right up my alley! So cool.

The bail also has a double arm, so when body is flipped, it will pick up in the opposite direction.

The bail arm is studded onto the flier and cannot be removed.
No issue, I'll tape it off for repaint of flier.

The drag for this reel is unique to itself.

Drag is adjusted via the knurled brass wheel attached at handle arm base.

It consists of a hollow brass sleeve with a flat base, that nests into the drive gear.

Then, a brass bushing slides over the sleeve, on the opposite side of drive gear. A spring and indented flat washer top it off.
Then, entire assembly is covered with a brass tube and finished off with the knurled wheel.

As the knurled wheel is tightened, it pulls the shaft and flat shaft foot into the drive gear, thereby applying drag to the gear.

Loosen the knurled wheel to lessen the pressure on the drive gear, to lighten the drag.

Pretty ingenious.

She's in rough shape cosmetically,  and not functioning mechanically, and is in need of a total refresh.

Some set screws are busted and will be replaced.

So a complete strip and restore is in the works!

More to come!

Peace!

Thanks. A very cool old reel.
This is gonna be amazing looking when finished.
 The brass body is beautiful.
I didn't put up any scale pictures, but it is a tiny thing, too.

Much more to come! Stay tuned!

You know it!

She's getting a complete makeover so, we'll see how she shines.

Back with a bit of progress...

Got all parts cleaned of grease, stripped of old paint, cleaned, polished, and repainted.

All brightwork polished and slot scruff tidied up.

Painted flier, handle stem, and foot stem with coat of primer and then coat of flat black.

I also painted the machined block attached to the stamped brass body, black, as well.

The mix of different colored metals against the black, really pop.

The crazing on the old wooden knob is a nice touch, too.

Soaked the oxidized aluminum spool in vinegar before hitting it with some elbow grease and steel wool.

All is now ready for reassembly and to see how it contrasts together.

 I'm thinking, beautifully.

Peace!

Got her all repainted and shined up!

Reassembly went fine with no issues, other than the brass check carrier set screw was shot and I had to drill and tap for a new one.

No biggie. Knocked that out easily and brass check is holding firm. It threads onto non rotating shaft end and the set screw holds it firm from back off from spool rotation.

Drag clicker, mounted in flier, has a nice click to it and is constant.

The drag washer set up in spool, consisted of a copper flat washer, 2 split spring washers, 1 indented washer, holding nut that compresses washers, and the brass finial.

Turned out really nice and has a great feel to it. Very basic, yet engineered.

The bail arm has a nice metal ting to it, when snapping closed.

The brass against the black really pops.

Overall, a really neat petite spin reel that I'm soon going to find out how well she performs.

Peace!

Thanks for the kind words!

This old girl is definitely a head turner.
Love the way she turned out with the brass on black pop!

Boy, considering the way I hold a spinning rod/reel combo that trip mechanism/action looks like it could be a real finger smacker/cutter.  :o  I'd have to reteach myself how to hold the outfit.  ;)

Really a cool reel, though! Well done!
Love those open face spinning reels! (Especially ABU & ABU/Zebco Cardinals)
